The First Cry
Nobody spoke.
The doctor continued staring at the golden bracelet.
The engraving was unlike any hospital identification tag.
The nurse checked the baby’s medical records.
“There isn’t any bracelet listed in his file.”
The father frowned.
“Then where did it come from?”
The doctor carefully turned the bracelet over.
On the inside was another tiny engraving.
A hospital room number.
“Room 108.”
Everyone looked at each other.
“There is no Room 108 on this floor,” the nurse whispered.
Curious, the doctor searched the hospital’s old building records.
His face slowly turned pale.
“There used to be a Room 108…”
He swallowed.
“…but it was sealed more than thirty years ago.”
Before anyone could ask why, the newborn suddenly stopped crying.
He slowly opened his eyes.
Instead of looking at his parents…
He stared toward the hospital door.
Three soft knocks echoed from outside.
Knock…
Knock…
Knock…
The father quickly opened the door.
The hallway was empty.
Nobody was there.
But on the floor lay another small golden bracelet.
This one was much older.
Attached to it was a folded note.
The doctor slowly unfolded it.
Written in faded ink were five chilling words:
“He’s Finally Back Home.”
The family stood frozen.
