The Secret Name
The room remained silent.
Lily stood beside the bassinet while everyone stared at her.
Her mother finally broke the silence.
“Lily… what are you talking about?”
The little girl hesitated.
Then she looked at her sleeping baby brother.
“I wasn’t supposed to tell.”
Her father knelt beside her.
“Tell what?”
Lily took a deep breath.
For several seconds she said nothing.
Then she spoke.
“Before he was born, I used to talk to him.”
Her parents smiled.
That wasn’t unusual.
Many children talk to unborn siblings.
But Lily continued.
“Every night.”
“I told him stories.”
“I sang songs.”
“I told him my secret name.”
Her mother looked confused.
“What secret name?”
Lily lowered her eyes.
“When I was little, Grandma gave me a special name.”
The room became quiet again.
Grandma.
The mention of that word immediately caught everyone’s attention.
Lily’s grandmother had passed away two years earlier.
She and Lily had been extremely close.
“What name?” her father asked softly.
Lily swallowed.
“Grandma used to call me Sunshine.”
Her mother’s eyes widened.
Nobody outside the family knew that nickname.
It had always been private.
A special name used only by Grandma.
Lily looked toward the baby.
“I told him that name every night.”
The doctor smiled gently.
“That’s sweet.”
But Lily shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
The little girl pointed toward the newborn.
Then she whispered:
“He said it back.”
The room instantly went silent.
“What?” her mother asked.
Lily nodded.
“A few days ago.”
Her father frowned.
“What do you mean?”
The girl looked nervous.
“I had a dream.”
“In the dream, I was talking to him.”
“He called me Sunshine.”
The nurses exchanged uneasy glances.
Children often had vivid imaginations.
But Lily looked completely serious.
Then something happened.
The newborn suddenly opened his eyes.
Everyone turned toward the bassinet.
The baby looked directly at Lily.
For a brief moment, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then the baby slowly relaxed his grip and fell asleep again.
The room finally breathed.
The doctor smiled.
“Looks like he likes his big sister.”
Everyone laughed softly.
The tension disappeared.
Later that night, after the nurses left and the lights dimmed, Lily sat beside the bassinet one last time.
She smiled at her baby brother.
Then she whispered:
“Goodnight.”
A tiny smile appeared on the baby’s face.
And for the first time, Lily felt certain of one thing.
Some bonds begin after birth.
Others begin long before.
And sometimes…
Love finds a way to recognize itself, even before two people ever meet.
