The Empty Bassinet

Nobody spoke.

The room remained completely silent.

The father stared at the tiny footprint.

The doctor immediately compared it to the twins’ hospital records.

His face turned pale.

“It’s not theirs.”

The mother sat up in bed.

“What do you mean?”

The doctor swallowed.

“The size is different.”

The nurse checked again.

The footprint was slightly larger than both twins’.

Grandfather looked toward the empty bassinet.

A chill ran through his body.

Then the doctor noticed something else.

A date was written beneath the footprint.

Today’s date.

But beside it was a time.

11:47 PM.

The room froze.

One problem.

The twins had been born at 12:03 AM.

The footprint’s timestamp was sixteen minutes earlier.

Impossible.

There had been no baby before them.

Or had there?

Then suddenly one of the heart monitors beeped.

Everyone turned.

Both twins had stopped crying.

Now they were staring toward the empty bassinet.

At exactly the same spot.

Neither baby blinked.

Neither looked away.

Then a nurse gasped.

Something was lying inside the bassinet again.

Another note.

The father slowly opened it.

This time there were only four words.

“I’M STILL WAITING.”

Before anyone could speak, the room lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

And when the lights returned…

A third hospital bracelet lay inside the bassinet.

Attached to it was a name.

The family stared in horror.

Because the bracelet carried their last name.

But none of them had ever heard the first name written on it.

The bracelet read:

“Baby Carter #3”
